Long Grove, located in Lake County, Illinois, 29 miles northwest of the Loop, is a unique enclave steeped in history and culture. Its beginnings trace back to 1838, marked by large oak groves that were later claimed by German immigrants in the mid-1840s. The area, initially named Muttersholz (“Mother's Woods”) due to its strong German influence, saw the establishment of St. Mary's parish and an Evangelical Lutheran congregation. By the time of World War I, the community had transformed back to Long Grove, with English becoming more widely spoken.

Long Grove's growth remained slow but steady, with its population only reaching 640 by 1960. However, the post-World War II era saw it evolve into a hub for the antique trade, attracting affluent Chicagoans. The community's commitment to preserving its historic character led to the formation of an association in the early 1950s. This association successfully opposed major development plans, instead advocating for a three-acre minimum lot size for new construction. This led to the incorporation of the village of Long Grove in 1956, with Guy Reed as its first president. Since then, Long Grove has maintained its antique style through strict ordinances and regulations, contributing to its charm and appeal.
