Home Modification for Seniors

You start feeling different as the years go by. Stairs that never bothered you might feel a bit unsteady now. Getting out of the shower could be trickier than it used to be. These changes happen to most of us, and they're nothing to be embarrassed about. Home modification for seniors can help address these new challenges, making your living space safer and easier to navigate.
You don't need to gut your entire house to make it work better for you. Sometimes the smallest tweaks make the biggest difference in how comfortable and secure you feel at home.
Why Home Modifications Matter for Aging in Place
Most people want to stay put in their own homes as they get older. Makes sense, really. Your house holds all those memories from decades of living. It's where you feel most comfortable and in control of your daily routine.
Aging in place sounds great, here's something that might surprise you: the CDC says one in four adults over 65 takes a tumble each year. A lot of these falls happen right at home. The good news? Many could likely be prevented with some smart home accessibility modifications. When you tackle potential trouble spots before they actually cause problems, you're setting yourself up for safer living down the road.
Planning ahead with home modifications appears to work better than waiting until you really need them. Say you install grab bars while you're still steady on your feet. They'll be right there when your balance isn't quite what it used to be. Motion sensor lights install can stop you from stumbling around in the dark during those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips.
FixHome+'s Home Modification for Seniors
FixHome+ works with seniors throughout Chicago's northwest suburbs, focusing on practical types of home modifications that help people stay safe in their own homes. Our team zeroes in on home improvement that may reduce fall risks while keeping your living space feeling like home.
Grab Bars Installation
Grab bars give you something solid to hold onto in bathrooms and anywhere else you might need extra stability. They're particularly helpful when you're stepping into or out of the shower, standing up from the toilet, or moving through spots where balance tends to be more important.
Handrails Installation
Handrails can make stairs feel a lot safer by giving you continuous support from bottom to top. They're especially useful when you're carrying something or just having one of those days when you feel a bit wobbly.
Installing Anti-Slip Strips or Treads
These strips add some grip to stairs, bathtubs, and smooth floors where slipping might be a concern. They create a slightly textured surface that helps your feet stay put, even when things get a bit wet.

Install Raised Toilet Seats
Raised toilet seats cut down on how far you need to lower yourself and get back up during bathroom visits. This modification appears to be especially helpful if your knees, hips, or back give you trouble.
Door Lever Installation
Door levers swap out those round knobs for handles that don't require as much grip strength. You can actually open them with your elbow or forearm if your hands are full or if arthritis makes gripping painful.
Senior Safety Lock Installation
These specialized locks try to balance keeping your home secure with making things easier to operate. Keypad or Wi-Fi systems let you skip the tiny keys altogether. Lever-style deadbolts don't require as much twisting strength as traditional locks.

Installing a Threshold Ramp or Small Ramp
Small ramps get rid of those little step-ups that can catch your toes. They smooth out the transition between different floor levels and make doorways work better if you use a walker or wheelchair. These ramps tend to be pretty low-profile after installation, so they don't dramatically change how your home looks.
Install Motion Sensor Lights or Switches
Motion sensor lights flip on automatically when you walk into a room or hallway. No more fumbling around for motion sensor switches in the dark. They seem particularly handy for those nighttime bathroom runs or when you're moving through dimly lit areas.
Assembling and Installing a Shower Chair or Bench
Shower seating gives you a safe spot to sit while you bathe, which may reduce fall risks in wet conditions. Standing for long periods in the shower can be tiring, and having a secure place to sit can make the whole experience more comfortable. That's why you may need chair assembly and shower bench assembly - to make sure everything's stable.
