The area was originally inhabited by Native American Potawatomi migrants from Canada and Wisconsin, with the first European visitors being French Jesuit explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet. The village was officially incorporated in 1957 and as per the 2020 census, it boasts a population of 7,940.
