Lake Barrington, IL

Located in Lake County, Illinois, Lake Barrington is a picturesque village situated 35 miles northwest of the Loop. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans over three thousand years ago, who were drawn to its oak- and prairie-covered rolling hills and marshlands. Post the Black Hawk War in 1832, farmers began settling in the area, primarily focusing on dairying as a source of income. The region remained largely rural until after World War I when Chicago businessmen started transforming farms into estates. In 1946, Robert Bartlett purchased a significant portion of land around Indian Lake and conceived the idea of a densely populated residential complex, which he renamed Lake Barrington.

Lake Barrington's incorporation as an independent village happened on October 31, 1959, alongside North Barrington, following zoning disputes with estate owners who wished to maintain larger lot sizes. Under the leadership of Jorgen Hubschman, who supported Bartlett's vision, the village witnessed development and population growth. Following Bartlett's death in 1967, Lake Barrington grappled with zoning issues as developers sought to construct high-density subdivisions. A compromise in the early 1970s allowed the completion of Lake Barrington Shores, a condo development, and the imposition of less dense zoning regulations elsewhere in the village. In 1988, Lake Barrington joined the Barrington Area Council of Governments to protect its zoning plan and preserve its semi-rural status and affluent character.
Per the 2020 census, the population was 5,100.
