Highland Park, IL

Highland Park, Illinois is a picturesque suburb in Lake County, located 23 miles north of the Loop. The area's beautiful bluffs, lake vistas, and ravines were once traversed by Potawatomi before the Black Hawk War. In the mid-19th century, German immigrants founded two village ports, St. Johns (1847), and Port Clinton (1850). By 1855, the area fell under the control of Walter S. Gurnee, a former Chicago mayor and real estate speculator. Recognizing the potential for residential development, he platted the area for settlement. Highland Park was officially incorporated as a city in March 1869 with about 600 residents.

The city's picturesque appeal was accentuated by landscape architects Horace W. S. Cleveland and William French, who designed the streets. As the city developed, it welcomed a diverse population, from affluent professionals building estates along the lake bluffs to service providers residing in more modest homes inland. Highland Park continued to expand through the 20th century, experiencing significant growth in the 1920s and 1950s. Today, the city is known for its village character, public amenities, and the Ravinia Music Festival, a legacy that began as a recreational park and cultural center in 1904. According to the 2020 census, Highland Park has a population of 30,176.
