Elk Grove Village, IL

Elk Grove Village, situated in Cook and Lake Counties in Illinois, is a distinctive suburban town located 20 miles northwest of the Loop. Unlike most suburbs that emerged around nineteenth-century market towns or railroad depots, Elk Grove Village began as a center of settlement around 1940 where Touhy Avenue intersects with Route 53. This was in the southeastern corner of the old Elk Grove township, named after the vast grove now known as the Ned Brown Forest Preserve. From the mid-1830s onwards, this area attracted both Potawatomi hunters and Yankee settlers.

The village remained very rural until the Second World War, with no railway traversing this part of the country. However, in the early 1940s, the O'Hare Airport began to emerge as a manufacturing center for Douglas transport aircraft and later became a major hub for United Airlines, which set up its headquarters in Elk Grove Village. The village was incorporated in 1956 with a population of just 125. Development quickly escalated following a plan proposed by the Centex Corporation of Dallas, Texas. By the late 1950s and 1960s, the village had grown into a full-fledged suburb with schools, churches, and shopping centers. The construction of the Northwest Tollway in 1958 greatly spurred this growth. In 2021, Elk Grove Village reached 32,066 inhabitants.
