Wilmette, IL

Located in Cook County, Illinois, Wilmette is a vibrant village nestled 2 miles northwest of Evanston and 15 miles north of Chicago. The area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians until the French-Canadian fur trader, Antoine Ouilmette, convinced the local Native Americans to sign the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1829. As a reward, the U.S. government granted him 1,280 acres of land, which ultimately bore his name. The arrival of European settlers in the 1840s and the entry of the Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee Railroad tracks in 1854 spurred development. Wilmette was officially incorporated as a village on September 19, 1872.
