Des Plaines, situated in Cook County, Illinois, is a vibrant city 16 miles northwest of Chicago and forms part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The area was originally home to the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Chippewa Indians before settlers from New England and New York arrived around 1833. Named after the Des Plaines River, the city was first incorporated as a village in 1869 under the leadership of its first Village President, Franklin Whitcomb. It was reincorporated in 1873 and eventually adopted a city form of government in 1925, with H.T. Bennet as its inaugural mayor.
