Evanston, IL

Evanston, located in Cook County and resting on the shores of Lake Michigan, is a vibrant city just 12 miles north of the Loop. Originally home to Potawatomis until the 1830s, the area was later settled by farmers from upstate New York and German-speaking immigrants. In 1853, Northwestern University purchased more than three hundred acres of land and held its first Evanston classes two years later. The town, named after John Evans, one of Northwestern's founders, was officially incorporated as a village in 1863.

The city experienced significant growth following the Chicago Fire of 1871, as many affluent Chicagoans moved to Evanston for safety. This influx led to a population boom and the eventual merging with North and South Evanston. The African-American community, which predated the Civil War, also expanded significantly, with many working in light manufacturing alongside Polish immigrants. The city later became a wealthy enclave in the 1920s due to a real estate boom and a premier dining center in the 1970s. Despite periodic town-gown conflicts and economic challenges, Evanston remains one of Chicago's most stable and attractive suburbs, with a population of approximately 75,000 residents.
