South Barrington, IL

South Barrington, a village in Cook County, Illinois, is located 30 miles northwest of the Loop. The village is a blend of contrasts, with its southern edge thriving with corporate activity while its northern part features estate-sized homes on expansive acreage. South Barrington's diversity is reflected in its unique features such as old farm buildings repurposed for modern use and a large fiberglass pumpkin that marks Goebbert's Pumpkin and Farm Market. The community also boasts one of the largest nondenominational churches in the country.

The area remained agricultural until the 1950s when residents sought to form a village. Fierce debates over zoning laws led to the incorporation of South Barrington in 1959, ahead of another group aiming to establish Barrington Countryside. The new village eventually adjusted zoning laws to allow for minimum lot sizes of one and a half acres. South Barrington continued to grow, with William Rose, one of its founders, developing several subdivisions and repurposing farm buildings for commercial use. Despite clashes with neighboring Hoffman Estates over land annexation, South Barrington has managed to maintain its tranquil setting, complete with 45 private lakes and ponds, and an 80-acre prairie preserve donated to the Audubon Society of Chicago. As of 2020, the population stood at 5,077 and the village covered about seven square miles.
