Lake Forest, Illinois, situated in Lake County and 27 miles north of the Loop, is a sought-after retreat for Chicago's upper class and a gem among the suburbs along the North Shore. The area was first inhabited by white settlers around 1834 for farming purposes. However, it wasn't until the introduction of railroads in 1855 that daily commuting became feasible. It was listed on the National Register of Historical Sites in 1978 as the nation's first planned shopping center. The city continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century, with zoning ordinances enacted to preserve its historic scale. As of the 2020 census, Lake Forest boasts a population of 19,367.
