Kildeer, Illinois is a serene village nestled in Lake County, about 30 miles northwest of the Loop. The first known settlers were German farmers who bought land from the U.S. government at $1.25 per acre around 1837. The area was characterized by its rich, rolling, heavily forested landscape, interspersed with streams and small lakes. Ela Township, named after early landowner George Ela, was organized in 1849, and by 1852, a post office called Ela was established in Quentin's general store, a popular trading center at the intersection of Rand and Quentin Roads.
The advent of paved highways in the early 1900s made commuting easier and drew weekend visitors and vacationers to the surrounding lakes. However, the community had to rally together in 1958 when Brickman Builders announced plans to construct a massive residential and commercial development project for a population of 60,000. To protect their tranquil environment, residents incorporated the village of Kildeer. The village government established a one-acre minimum on residential lots, maintained narrow country-style roads, and placed severe restrictions on commercial development. As of the 2020 census, Kildeer has a population of 4,091.
