Deer Park, IL

Deer Park, located in Lake County, Illinois, is 31 miles northwest of the Loop. The area was first settled by George Ela in 1835, who claimed 281 acres of land that later became Deer Grove Forest Preserve. Yankee farmers followed suit, and in 1854, the Illinois & Wisconsin Railroad (Chicago & North Western Railway) extended its track from Chicago to Deer Park. However, when the railroad attempted to purchase surrounding land to build a village, local landowners Ezekiel Cady and Barney Elfrink resisted, preferring to preserve the tranquility of the area.

Even with this setback, Deer Park continued to thrive as a serene and rural community, drawing the attention of well-to-do farmers in the early 1900s. To maintain its country atmosphere, the community incorporated as a village in 1957, passing an ordinance restricting residences to one house per acre. The population grew steadily over the years, reaching 3,902 in 2000. Despite some opposition from residents, the village has seen several developments, including the Deer Park Town Center, a mixed-use development with shopping, restaurants, and a cinema. Per the 2020 census, Deer Park is home to 3,681 residents.
