Barrington, IL

Barrington, Illinois, nestled in Cook and Lake Counties, is a village located 32 miles northwest of the Loop. The area's rich agricultural land, situated between Chicago and the Fox River, attracted settlers after the Black Hawk War in the 1830s. However, it was William Butler Ogden's interest in linking the northwest to Chicago's port facilities that truly spurred the area's development. In 1854, Ogden extended the Chicago, St. Paul & Fond du Lac Railroad (later known as the Chicago & North Western Railway) to this area, establishing a station named Deer Grove.

Despite initial resistance from local farmers, Robert Campbell, a civil engineer for the railroad, platted a community near Deer Grove in 1854. Named Barrington, after Barrington, Massachusetts, this new settlement quickly gained traction, especially during the Civil War era. The post–World War I prosperity led to the construction of opulent residences on large tracts of woodland, ending the predominance of dairying. With a current population of 11,174, Barrington maintains its reputation as an estate community, resisting densely packed developments and preserving its unique character.
