Riverwoods, located in Lake County, Illinois, is an idyllic settlement that stands as a testament to the power of environmental protection. Situated 24 miles northwest of the Loop, this village is renowned for its towering trees and natural beauty. The area was once used by the Potawatomis for their winter campgrounds, with remnants of their maple syrup production still visible on local trees. In 1841, Jessie Leavensworth became one of the first settlers in the region. By 1885, the Wisconsin Central Railroad had established a spur line, making the area a popular weekend destination for city dwellers seeking the tranquility of nature.

The 1920s saw many Chicagoans and North Shore residents construct summer cabins along the Des Plaines River, drawn to the natural splendor of the area. One notable resident was Edward Ryerson, who purchased a cabin in 1928 and later acquired Brushwood Farm, which eventually became a forest preserve. Another resident, Louis Bouscaren, built a vacation home in Riverwoods and played a crucial role in maintaining the area's unique character by stipulating that properties had to be between one and two acres. The village was officially incorporated in 1959, to preserve its wooded environment from external encroachment. In keeping with its natural ethos, part of the village hall is housed in a log cabin built in 1929. As per the 2020 census, Riverwoods had a population of 3,790.
